NOTE: Students under the age of 16 MUST contact Arc + Flame Blacksmithing Director (Candace Martens) for an evaluation prior to enrolling in a smithing class. Arc + Flame Blacksmithing Samplers are an excellent way to get a taste of forging. Our experienced instructors will use a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands-on instruction at the forge to enhance your learning experience.

These classes are designed as teasers to let you experience what it's like to work hot steel. Focus will be on the fundamentals of hammer control to get the steel to respond the way you want it to.

NOTE: Blacksmithing Classes are very interactive and involve significant physical activity. Please make sure to wear close-toed sneakers or boots, jeans and a cotton t-shirt. Do NOT wear flip-flops, open toed shoes or highly flammable clothing. Learn to create a Hook out of metal by hot forging with a musical theme. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and shaping hot metal. Forms may be used to help facilitate the bends necessary to achieve the appearance of musical notes.  (Open to all levels)

 

Learn to create a bottle opener out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of punching a slot, drifting it open, using a punch to set a tab and testing it. Once the bottle opener is finished the student will complete the other end with a twist and/or a decorative finial as time permits. (Open to all levels)

   

Learn to create a small cheese spreading knife out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of shaping and forming hot steel. (Open to all levels)

Learn to create a metal dog head by hot forging. The class will go over how to use the various parts of the anvil to develop the defining areas of a dog's head then decorative punches will be used to add features. Once the head is finished the student will complete the other end with a twist and/or a decorative finial as time permits. (Open to all levels) 

  

Celebrate National Poop Day and learn to create a wall mounted towel or toilet paper hanger out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forging with the anvil, hammer and tooling to give the holder shape and character. (Open to all levels)

Come celebrate National Walk the Dog Day and learn to make a wall hook to hold your dog's leash by hot forging. The class will go over how to form a wall hook using the various areas of the anvil. We will complete the hook with a dog's head decoration. (Open to all levels)

Come celebrate National Chili day and learn to make your own spoon by hot forging. The class will go over how to form the spoon by using the various areas of the anvil. Once the spoon is finished the student will complete the other end with a twist and/or a decorative finial as time permits. (Open to all levels)

Learn to sharpen knives. This class will over the fundamentals of knife sharpening utilizing water stones, which the students get to keep. Students should bring a 3-6 inch knife from home to practice on. (Open to all levels)

Includes basic sharpening kit (Combination Water Stone, Mat, Angle Guides, Leather Strop with Compound, & Carrying Case) an $85 value.

Celebrate Compliment Day and learn to create a bottle opener with a custom message on the handle made out of metal by hot forging and stamping. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and decorating with the anvil, hammer and tooling to give the bottle opener shape and character. (Open to all levels) 

Celebrate Plant Power Day and learn to create a herb chopper made out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and decorating with the anvil, hammer and tooling to give the chopper shape and character. (Open to all levels) 

Learn to make a show stopper for National Meatball Day! Students will learn to split the end of a bar, forge out the tines and shape a carving fork out of mild steel. After the fork is done the student will complete the other end with a twist and/or a decorative finial as time permits. (Open to all levels)

Celebrate National Pi Day and learn to create a pie slice shovel out of metal by hot forging and riveting. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and riveting with the anvil and hammer to give the pie slice shovel shape and character. (Open to all levels)

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day and learn to create your own snake by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and shaping with the anvil and hammer to give the snake shape and character. (Open to all levels)

Celebrate Respect Your Cat Day and learn to create a bottle opener with a cat shape out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and decorating with the anvil, hammer and tooling to give the opener shape and character. (Open to all levels)

 

Celebrate National Deep Dish Pizza Day and learn to create a pizza cuter out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and decorating with the anvil, hammer and tooling to give the pizza cutter shape and character. (Open to all levels)

 

Celebrate International Harry Potter Day and learn to create very own wand out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and decorating with the anvil, hammer and tooling to give the wand shape and character. (Open to all levels)

Learn to create a letter opener out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and decorating with the anvil, hammer and tooling to give the letter opener shape and character. (Open to all levels)

 

Learn to create a metal horse head by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of creating shoulders to develop the defining areas of a horse's head then decorative punches will be used to add features. Once the head is finished the student will complete the other end with a twist and/or a decorative finial as time permits. (Open to all levels)

   

Learn to create a leaf out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of creating a shoulder to isolate material, how to use various punches to add detail and how to form with the anvil to give the leaf life. Once the leaf is finished the student will complete the other end with a twist and/or a decorative finial as time permits. Depending on time and skill, students could also make it into a wall hook or bottle opener. (Open to all levels)
