ATTENTION: Students must be AT LEAST 16-years of age to attend any recreational class at our facility, unless otherwise specified.

Students are required to wear boots or sneakers that cover their whole foot, jeans or long pants that cover your whole leg & ankle, and a t-shirt that covers their shoudlers.

Please do not wear flammable materials such as Nylon or Synthetics.

Please do not wear sandals, crocks, open toed shoes, shorts, or dresses.

Blacksmithing Sampler

EVERYTHING NEEDED FOR CLASS IS INCLUDED IN PRICE

Rochester Arc + Flame Center’s Samplers are an excellent way to get a taste of forging. These classes are designed as teasers to let you experience what it's like to work with hot steel. Focus will be on the fundamentals of hammer control to get the steel to respond the way you want it to. Each sampler focuses on a specific project that students get to take with them at the end of class.

Our experienced instructors will use a combination of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on instruction at the forge to enhance your learning experience. These classes are great for beginners and experienced tradesmen!

All safety equipment and smithing materials are included in the course price.

Blacksmithing Sampler Project

Learn to create a bottle opener out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of creating a functional shape with a punched and drifted hole. Once the bottle opener is finished the student will add decorative elements as time permits. (Open to all levels)

Learn to create a key fob out of metal by hot forging.The class will go over some basic operations of forging to shape and mold the metal. Once the fob is finished the student will complete it with decorative elements as time permits. (Open to all levels)

Learn to make a show stopper for the next time you host thanksgiving! Students will learn to split the end of a bar, forge out the tines and shape a carving fork out of mild steel. After the fork is done the student will complete the other end with a twist and/or a decorative finial as time permits. (Open to all levels)

Celebrate National Pizza Day and learn to create a pizza cuter out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and decorating with the anvil, hammer and tooling to give the pizza cutter shape and character. (Open to all levels)

Come celebrate National Chili Day and learn to make your own spoon by hot forging. The class will go over how to form the spoon by using the various areas of the anvil. Once the spoon is finished the student will complete the other end with a twist and/or a decorative finial as time permits.(Open to all levels)

Learn to create a hook with a musical theme out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and shaping hot metal. Forms may be used to help facilitate the bends necessary to achieve the appearance of musical notes. (Open to all levels)

Learn to create a metal dog head by hot forging. The class will go over how to use the various parts of the anvil to develop the defining areas of a dog's head then decorative punches will be used to add features. Once the head is finished the student will complete the other end with a twist and/or a decorative finial as time permits.(Open to all levels)

Learn the most utilized blacksmithing techniques of tapering and bending while making a hook to hang your hat on! Well you could really hang anything.(Open to all levels)

Learn to create a metal horse head by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of creating shoulders to develop the defining areas of a horse's head then decorative punches will be used to add features. Once the head is finished the student will complete the other end with a twist and/or a decorative finial as time permits. (Open to all levels)

Celebrate Cat Month and learn to create a bottle opener with a cat shape out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and decorating with the anvil, hammer and tooling to give the opener shape and character. (Open to all levels)

Learn to create a hook with a heart finial out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming with the anvil and hammer to give the heart shape and character. (Open to all levels)

Learn to create a letter opener out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and decorating with the anvil, hammer and tooling to give the letter opener shape and character.(Open to all levels)

Learn to create a leaf out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of creating a shoulder to isolate material, how to use various punches to add detail and how to form with the anvil to give the leaf life. Once the leaf is finished the student will complete the other end with a twist and/or a decorative finial as time permits. Depending on time and skill, students could also make it into a wall hook or bottle opener.(Open to all levels)
