NOTE: Students under the age of 16 MUST contact Arc + Flame Blacksmithing Director (Candace Martens) for an evaluation prior to enrolling in a smithing class. Arc + Flame Blacksmithing Samplers are an excellent way to get a taste of forging. Our experienced instructors will use a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands-on instruction at the forge to enhance your learning experience.

These classes are designed as teasers to let you experience what it's like to work hot steel. Focus will be on the fundamentals of hammer control to get the steel to respond the way you want it to.

NOTE: Blacksmithing Classes are very interactive and involve significant physical activity. Please make sure to wear close-toed sneakers or boots, jeans and a cotton t-shirt. Do NOT wear flip-flops, open toed shoes or highly flammable clothing. If you any have concerns with your vision, hearing, hand dexterity or mental health please contact Arc + Flame Center at 585-349-7110 before signing up for this class. We want to ensure the best possible class experience for all of our students!

    • 3.5-hour class period: 6:30pm-10pm
    • Enrollment: 3 to 10 students

      Available Sampler Sessions: (Each class will focus on the topic listed, see below for project descriptions)

      • Tuesday, June 15th: Smiling Bunny Bottle Opener (6:30pm-10pm)
      • Monday, July 19th: Bacon Tongs (6:30pm-10pm)
      • Wednesday, July 21st: Campfire Hotdog Stick (6:30pm-10pm)
      • Monday, August 16th: Heart Hook (6:30pm-10pm)
      • Wednesday, August 18th: Wine Bottle Holder (6:30pm-10pm)

      Project Descriptions:

      • Smiling Bunny Bottle Opener: Celebrate Smile Power Day and learn to create a smiling bunny bottle opener out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forging with the anvil, hammer and tooling to give the bottle opener shape and character. (Open to all levels)
      • Bacon Tongs: Celebrate your love of all things bacon by creating a pair of tongs designed for turning and serving bacon out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and shaping with the anvil and hammer to give the utensils shape. (Open to all levels)
      • Campfire Hotdog Stick: Celebrate Hotdog Day and learn to create a campfire fork out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of splitting and forming with the anvil, hammer and tooling to give the utensils shape. (Open to all levels)
      • Heart Hook: Learn to create a hook with a heart finial out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming with the anvil and hammer to give the heart shape and character. (Open to all levels)
      • Wine Bottle Holder: Learn to create a free-flowing tabletop wine bottle holder out of metal by hot forging. The class will go over the basic operations of forming and shaping with the anvil and hammer to give the wine bottle holder shape and character. Final tweaking for balance will be done with the torch. (Open to all levels)
