American Bladesmithing Society: Introduction to Bladesmithing (2-Week Course)
Certified by the American Bladesmith Society (ABS) and taught by ABS Master Smiths, this two week course is designed for anyone (beginners to experienced metal workers) who is interested in learning how to make high quality forged blades. Each day will include both lecture and hands-on time with an hour break for lunch. Lecture topics will include metal/material selection, blade function and blade design. Hands on time will include forging metal to shape, normalizing, heat treating, grinding and tempering. These semi-finished blades will then be tested for their cutting ability, edge holding, hardness and flexibility.
While handles and guards are not apart of this course they may be discussed. Students who successfully complete this course should be prepared to venture into a handles and guards course next so look through our other offerings.
Successful completion of this course will reduce the required 3 year waiting period to a 2 year wait as an ABS Apprentice member for eligibility to submit their knives for ABS Journeyman Smith judging.
If you have any questions, please contact our Smithing Director, Candace Martens, at blacksmithing@rocafc.com.

Instructor Bio:
Scott McGhee: The April 2023 ABS Introduction to Bladesmithing Workshop session will be taught by Scott McGhee. He has been a Master Bladesmith since 2016. He grew up in Franklinton, NC where he first dabbled in metal work as a teenager on his parents' farm. At age 17, Scott attended a blacksmithing session at the acclaimed Penland School of Crafts in western NC. He blacksmithed sporadically over the years and only discovered his passion for forging blades in 2009. Scott received his ABS Journeyman certification in 2012 and went full-time as a knife maker soon after. He obtained his Master Smith certification in June 2016.
Scott has a BS in forestry from the University of Montana and fought forest fires for several years. Fire and wood are two of Scott's passions. He spent many years working as a certified arborist before becoming a bladesmith and is known for putting the flowing lines of nature into his work.
Scott currently resides in rural Southeastern, NC with his wife Lydia. In addition to making knives, Scott and his wife raise heritage breed farm animals.
Scott is the resident smith at Guinea Hog Forge (https://www.guineahogforge.com/default.asp).
