(Update as of 9/22/20) We are closed for retail/walk-in traffic on Wednesday (9/23), Thursday (9/24), and Friday (9/25) for maintenance! The studio will NOT be open to the general public on these days. We appreciate your understanding. If you need assistance, please email info@rocafc.com or leave a voicemail at 585-349-7110. We’ll do our best to return your question in 24-hours. Thank you for your cooperation.

Arc + Flame is still not cleared to run any classes for the general public, including open torch flameworking. As a result, we have postponed all classes through Sept. 30th, 2020. This is based entirely on New York State’s mandates pertaining to COVID. Our center is open for retail and walk-in customers from 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday. Our Fall 2020 Welding & Fabrication Industry Certificate Program through Monroe Community College is currently able to run because of direct partnership with higher education. The same goes for our collegiate welding classes for engineering students through Rochester Institute of Technology and machining and HVAC students through Monroe Community College. Please read our re-open plan for more details. We appreciate your understanding.

The Heat Treating Process

ABS Master Bladesmith Kevin Cashen will conduct a two day class studying reliable heat treating processes for blades. Heat treating is full of mystery these days by and large due to inaccurate depictions in movies and TV that invade the social conscious. A solid foundation in this knowledge and skill will set you apart as a knife or tool maker.

Unlike many bladesmithing heat treatment courses, Kevin will not only show how to do it, he offers a solid understanding of why and what is happening so that students can troubleshoot their own processes later on.

Students should bring several forged or stock removal knives (under 14") that are ready for heat treating as we will not be forging knives in this concentrated class. Students with questions about the materials may contact us at blacksmithing@rocafc.com prior to the class.

NOTE: Bladesmithing Classes are very interactive and involve significant physical activity. Please make sure to wear close-toed sneakers or boots, jeans and a cotton t-shirt. Do NOT wear flip-flops, open toed shoes or highly flammable clothing. If you any have concerns with your vision, hearing, hand dexterity or mental health please contact Arc + Flame Center at 585-349-7110 before signing up for this class. We want to ensure the best possible class experience for all of our students!
