(Update as of 9/22/20) We are closed for retail/walk-in traffic on Wednesday (9/23), Thursday (9/24), and Friday (9/25) for maintenance! The studio will NOT be open to the general public on these days. We appreciate your understanding. If you need assistance, please email info@rocafc.com or leave a voicemail at 585-349-7110. We’ll do our best to return your question in 24-hours. Thank you for your cooperation.

Arc + Flame is still not cleared to run any classes for the general public, including open torch flameworking. As a result, we have postponed all classes through Sept. 30th, 2020. This is based entirely on New York State’s mandates pertaining to COVID. Our center is open for retail and walk-in customers from 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday. Our Fall 2020 Welding & Fabrication Industry Certificate Program through Monroe Community College is currently able to run because of direct partnership with higher education. The same goes for our collegiate welding classes for engineering students through Rochester Institute of Technology and machining and HVAC students through Monroe Community College. Please read our re-open plan for more details. We appreciate your understanding.

ABS Master Bladesmith Kevin Cashen will conduct a three day class centered on blade and handle design.

Beginners of all arts often learn by mimicking others but eventually everyone wants to do their own thing. How do you know you're on the right track? What type of knife do you want to make? What is that knife's purpose? How will the handle be held? What sort of grip and range of motion do you need? All of these questions and more contribute to your design. A solid foundation in creating a purpose built knife is a skill that will set you apart as a true knife maker.

Kevin will focus on providing a solid understanding of the ‘'what and why'’ needs for a variety of different blades and handles so that students learn how to trouble shoot their own designs. Students are highly encouraged to bring several sketches of their own work or finished knives to class for discussion.

The goal of this class is to sketch out designs, rough forge several blades and rough carve some handles. The forgings will be ground for profiles only to maximize time spent on design and forging to plan. Blocks of poplar will be available for practice carving out handles.
