In this class the students will construct a Pediment of classical design such as would top a gate or window grill. The students will begin by drawing out the pediment full size and then building to the drawing. The skills of design and construction techniques, both traditional and current to-date will be taught through hands on participation.
The purpose of the class will be to teach how a master craftsman approaches these tasks (demystify) and explain variations. The instructor's focus is to teach an understanding of good design, instill a high standard level in the students attitude toward their work while at the same time understanding the need for economy in their labor.
Depending on the students ability and use of time, each student may also create sample elements of what they have learned to take home with them. Upon completion of the course each student should come away with a greater understanding (and appreciation) of what classical ironwork is, and an excitement (along with the ability) to create their own pieces with confidence.
NOTE: Students must be competent at the forge and be able to draw a taper and scroll the end of a bar on the anvils horn without supervision. There will also be forge welding involved. Students need not be masters of forge welding however class time will not be compromised by extended teaching of this one technique.
