RocAFC Blacksmithing Skill Building Workshops are an excellent way to learn and explore blacksmithing. Our experienced instructors will use a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands-on instruction at the forge to enhance your learning experience.
Tool Skill Building Workshops focus on the fundamental techniques blacksmiths use to create tools. Student practice samples will vary each class but students will be able to take all of them home. Returning students can email project ideas to the instructor for pre-approval.
NOTE: Blacksmithing Classes are very interactive and involve significant physical activity. Please make sure to wear close-toed sneakers or boots, jeans and a cotton t-shirt. Do NOT wear flip-flops, open toed shoes or highly flammable clothing. If you any have concerns with your vision, hearing, hand dexterity or mental health please contact Arc + Flame Center at 585-349-7110 before signing up for this class. We want to ensure the best possible class experience for all of our students!
Types of Projects:
Punches and Chisels: There is no satisfaction like making something with tools that you have also made. Students will forge various punches and chisels used when either cold or hot working steel. Using carbon steel students will hand forge various punches and chisels, grind them to refine the shape and perform a basic heat treat on them. (Open to all levels though some forging experience is recommended, such as our Skill Builder in Tapers)
Forging Woodworking Tools: Drawknife: There is no satisfaction like making something with tools that you have also made. Students will forge a versatile woodworking tool, the drawknife. Using fire and tool steel, we will hand forge a drawknife and heat treat the blade. The blade will then be sharpened and then, time permitting, be used to make its own handles. (Open to all levels though some forging experience is recommended, such as our Skill Builder in Tapers or the Woodworking Tools: Striking Knife & Bench Chisel class.)
Forging Woodworking Tools: Striking Knife and Bench Chisel: There is no satisfaction like making something with tools that you have also made. Students will begin by forging out a striking knife from tool steel. These tools make fine layout lines in the wood which not only make a mark far more accurately than a pencil can, but also sever the surface wood fibers reducing tear-out. The striking knife will also have a scribe point on the other end for marking points prior to drilling or doing layout in metal. The striking knife will then heat treated. In the second part of the class we will forge out 1" bench chisels and heat treat them. Students will wish to add a handle as an exercise at home though a demonstration will be given on making handles with simple hand tools. (Open to all levels though some forging experience is recommended, such as our Skill Builder - Tapers or Bladesmithing series.)
