American Bladesmithing Society: Handles and Guards (1-Week Course)
What do you do after you have taken the American Bladesmith Society (ABS) Introduction to Bladesmithing Class? Well, learn how to finish the handle and guard for a complete knife. Join us to learn from one of the ABS Master Bladesmiths.
Certified by the American Bladesmith Society (ABS) and taught by ABS Master Smiths, this weeklong course is designed for intermediate to advanced knifemakers* who want to improve their knife finishing skills. Each day will include both lecture and hands-on time with an hour break for lunch.
This class will cover both full tang and hidden tang knives. Topics will include blade preparation*, handle and guard material choices, pin stock, adhesives and overall composition and finish. The goal is to provide students with the knowledge and skill to finish off a knife to a professional level.
Time permitting other topics will be discussed such as butt caps, file work, carving, dagger handles and any others that wish to ask about. While some materials and tools will be provided you are welcome to bring any materials or tools you would like, especially if you have something specific in mind.
*Please note that this is an intermediate class, so students are required to have taken the ABS Introduction to Bladesmithing Class or have equivalent (instructor approved) experience. Students are required to bring a minimum of 2 completed blades** to class (This means you have forged, ground, heat treated and polished them. The blades should be straight from tip to end, the full tangs are flat and the hidden tang’s shoulders are evenly filed). The blades you bring should include at least one full and one hidden tang.
**You will get the most out of this class if you remember the completed part, the time spent on finishing your blades detracts from the time available to learn more about fit and finish of the handles and guards.
NOTE: Bladesmithing Classes are very interactive and involve significant physical activity. Please make sure to wear close-toed sneakers or boots, jeans and a cotton t-shirt. Do NOT wear flip-flops, open toed shoes or highly flammable clothing. If you any have concerns with your vision, hearing, hand dexterity or mental health please contact Arc + Flame Center at 585-349-7110 before signing up for this class. We want to ensure the best possible class experience for all of our students!

- August 2021 Session: August 9th - August 13th (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm): $795
Brion Tomberlin: The August 2021 session will be taught by Brion Tomberlin, owner of Anvil Top Custom Knives. Brion has been an ABS Master Smith since 2009.
I have been a knife maker for 40 years. I have always had a great interest in history and historical weapons, especially Japanese types. I am a collector of Japanese swords and oriental weapons.
A number of my designs will have Japanese and Oriental influences. My Main designs include bowies of all types, hunters, fighters, and specialty designs such as Persian fighters.
A number of my knives will display hamons also known as hardening lines. I prefer natural handle materials for my knives. Eventually I would like to make folders and learn engraving. If you have any comments, questions, or would like to place an order, please feel free to contact me. Thank you. (Tomberlin, ABS Master Smith Bio)
