Higo Style Rustic Friction Folder: Learn to create a wonderful conversation piece and functional tool. In this class we will cover the basics of designing and building a simple friction folding knife in the Higo Style.
Students will start by learning about appropriate steels and how to process them to bring out the desired qualities such as durability, edge retention and sharpenability. After discussion of material size constraints students will work a small piece of copper to create a decorative handle. Then they will design a blade to fit inside their handle. Finally students will create a pattern from their design and forge a blade just slightly larger than the pattern to allow for grinding.
After rough grinding the basics of heat treating will be reviewed and students will heat treat their blades. Finally the knife will be assembled.
For those who have their own, or have taken one of our Damascus Billet workshops, you can bring that in to use. Note: Material should be between 1/8" and 3/16" thick and at least 3/4" to 1" wide.
(NOTE: Above are examples of various topics offered, however each class focuses on only one. The topic of each class is listed with the corresponding date.)
