Coppersmithing Sampler

EVERYTHING NEEDED FOR CLASS IS INCLUDED IN PRICE

Arc + Flame Metal & Coppersmithing Samplers are an excellent way to learn about various metals and explore the fundamental techniques involved with forming them. Our experienced instructors will use a combination of lecture, demonstration and hands-on instruction to enhance your learning experience. These classes will cover the fundamentals of chasing designs in metals using hand tools. We will cover treatment of copper, the basic tools and the finishing of the materials.

Chasing is a series of techniques for the decoration of metalwork by forming the outside of a surface. The metal is worked from the front by hammering with tools that raise, depress, or push aside the metal without removing any from the surface. Chasing is the opposite of embossing or repoussé in which the metal is worked from the back to give a higher relief. Strictly chasing refers to line decoration applied to the face of repoussé work with a tracer but the term is frequently used more generally to describe any hammered or punched decoration on metal.

No prior experience is needed. Students with prior experience or who have already taken a class can email project ideas to the instructor for pre-approval. Each Class will cover different topics so be sure to check the class listing prior to checking out.
